History of Hammerschmidt, Amaral & Jonas
Hammerschmidt, Amaral & Jonas traces its origins to the early 1900s, when Louis Hammerschmidt began his legal practice in St. Joseph County. After service in World War II, Bruce Hammerschmidt joined his father in the practice. The father and son team practiced together, and with several other lawyers, until the death of the elder Mr. Hammerschmidt in 1966. In 1974, Joseph Amaral and Sanford Brook began practice as Amaral & Brook. R. William Jonas, Jr., joined the Amaral & Brook firm in 1981. In 1985, Brook left the practice to serve as a judge of the St. Joseph County Superior Court. Thereafter, his career continued as a member of the Indiana Court of Appeals.
The firm begun by Louis Hammerschmidt continued throughout the 20th century until Bruce Hammerschmidt’s union with Joseph Amaral and R. William Jonas, Jr., in 1986.
